Poor listening
Poor listening exacts a large price. As the eminent psychologist Carl Rogers once observed, “Man’s inability to communicate is a result of his failure to listen effectively, skillfully, and with understanding to another person.” The consequences can be enormous, both globally and personally. Nations may misunderstand each other’s motives, and go to war over the misunderstanding. When people in a group don’t listen well, they may make poor decisions. When juries don’t attend to the evidence presented, they cannot render a just verdict. If you don’t listen well to another person, you may lose his or her respect and affection. If you are not listening effectively in a classroom lecture or at new employee orientation at work, you may miss important information. At the very least, poor listening skills can create negative impressions of your competence that can hurt your ethos when you decide to speak.
