Sometimes carpet sagging doesn’t give up easily. You may find it simpler to replace the entire carpet. Save a bit of money by laying your own and using the old rug as padding. However, a rippling old carpet leaves bulges in the new. Trim away the stretched portions of the old carpet and tack the edges with contact cement. The old surface must be flat for the new carpet to lie flat.
Call in three carpet professionals and get estimates on the cost of new carpeting. Watch for carpet sales if you can, to improve your savings. Select the best value, but realize that best value doesn’t always mean cheapest price. Have the professionals measure and cut your new carpet to size. If piecing becomes necessary, they can draw you a diagram of where the pieces go. They should tag one end of the rolled carpet, such as the hitch end, to help you position the carpet without unrolling it first. Have them tag pieces as well.
Make sure your home is properly level before you lay any carpeting. Remove mouldings and carpet trim bars. Rent a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner and clean the old carpet thoroughly. Grit left in the old carpet fibers accelerates wear on the new carpet. Next apply double-adhesive carpet tape around the edges of the old rug. Position the new carpet and roll it Out. If it fits and lies flat, remove the backing from the top of the carpet tape and secure the new rug. Reinstall mouldings and the carpet trim bar.
